It was almost sunset, the chief had called out everybody to gather around and leave. The hunt was good today, for once they will not return empty handed.
Manex fixed his bag filled with provisions he had taken for the village. Since he was a little boy he had learned that this is the Blessed Land and we are children of the Sun. These days however, it would seem like the Zemi had gone as the elders say. Manex felt it too, ever since he had that nightmare the other day.
He decided to go to the chief for advice. All of a sudden, a loud thunder-like sound got everybody stunned and all the horses flee in panic. Everyone after your horse. Manex ran through the thick woods where he found the beast. His saddle was caught in a branch so he managed to calm the animal by stroking its ears.
"I don’t know what that was either."
He spoke to the horse while undoing the tie. Then another loud BANG ! The horse jumped forward, Manex received two hooves on the chest and bounced backward. He rolled over hitting his head and his body but all he was thinking was, O Zemi have mercy on my horse.
Manex ended in a water basin, the fall could have been worse. It was very deep, but the children of the Sun are as good in water as on the land. So he had tried to climb his way out but only to slip on the mud every time. He yelled for help but nobody would hear him.
That’s when a white snake showed up and dove into the water. The man was ready to defend himself, even without a tool.
The snake however did not care for him and kept going. Its skin was so bright under the water that Manex's eyes could easily follow him. Where are you headed?
Manex filled up his lung with air and went under water. If there is no way out upward, the white snake will make a way inward. He swam inside a hole under the water, his eyes locked on the snake. The water holds its secrets well, you must swim till you find the light.
The water led him inside a cave, Manex came out all wet. It was huge inside and he’d be lost in the dark if it were not for a small fire not too far. There was an old lady seated with her pipe, gazing at him. There are certain things you have been through, fear has no place anymore. He got closer to her and she said:
"Sit my child, come have a puff."
Then she handed him the pipe, Manex pulled and cough immediately after. The old lady smiled, adding:
"I am the one they call Gran Tita the old one, the snake took you here because it knows your heart. What is troubling you? "
Manex had forgotten that he was lost underground, that he had almost died and began telling his nightmare instead. The land was on fire, the elders were running and calling on the Zemi. A giant black beast was devouring the children. This had been tormenting his mind.
When he finished, Gran Tita took the ash from the pile and threw it into the fire. A huge black bird came out the flames then vanished.
“This is it ! That’s the beast from my dream O Zemi !”
Manex was shocked, his eyes were full of tears. The old lady said to him:
"My poor child this not a good sign at all. This bird is one that is always hungry just going around breaking havoc. It has already been to Guanahani and if I’m not wrong it has landed here. This was no thunder you have heard earlier, it was the song of the bird. The children are in grave danger."
"But why aren't the Zemi helping us? Are they really gone?"
"The Zemi are not here to fight, my child. Zemi are love, Zemi make life. They are no Zemi if they shed any blood but they have seen all the suffering of the children and they weep for that. The tears of Zemi are no joke, it will fertilize this soil till freedom flourishes, it is I, Gran Tita the old one who said it. My race was here before yours, another race will come after you. Yet very race shall be reunited one day on this Blessed Land to set the children free. You cannot stop them, take the ones you can here in the way under the water. The snake will lead you to the land of the old one, deep underneath the ground where this bird will not reach, do not forget this secret road."
The old lady stood up and clapped her hands three times to take out the fire. Manex could only see the shape of the white snake around her body. She came close to him and added:
"I will not show you the way out, trust me you will have no business outside once you come back here."
Then she hit his forehead three times and he fell unconscious.
Manex woke up on a beach the next morning and he could not tell if it was a dream but he remembered the words of the old one. As he was walking back to the village, he came across a few people the likes of which he had never seen before.
Their clothes were made of iron reflecting the sun as if they had no need for its light. Each had a long spare in hand, they grabbed Manex and dragged him. He did not resist and was observing. When they got to the one seemingly their chief, they threw Manex in front of him.
"Baneke ! " *
Manex gave no reply, it would seem that these people are in search of some treasure. They were carrying their symbol on a large banner, a big black bird in flame. That’s when he realized that these are the ones who came to take.
"Baneke ! "
The chief addressed him again, so Manex repeated. Everything he hears he began repeating. Finally they assumed he was just dumb so they let him go hoping he would bring back his own chief. He knew however that there was no time to lose, once these people had landed here, he must get the women and the children to swim till they see the light.
It was on December 5th 1492, Christopher Columbus led an expedition sent by the queen of Spain, Isabel the Catholic in search of a new road to reach India. That day will go down in history as the discovery of Ispagnola, but for the children of the Sun it was the last beautiful day on the blessed land.
Christopher and his people stole the treasures, raped the children and massacred a race near extinction. They even went all the way to Africa to steal the children from their mother’s grip to bleed them to death here on the blessed land.
As a reward for those crimes against humanity, Christopher Columbus is venerated as the discoverer of the new world, they built him statues, they named cities and country after this awful man. Meanwhile the children of the Sun are all gone, and the wicked sucked all the riches of the Blessed Land, that they named Ayiti.
That's the world we are living in, don’t be surprised by that. Remember what Gran Tita had said:
"The tears of a Zemes is no joke, it will fertilize this soil till freedom flourishes.”
* Baneke (Baneque or Babeque) refers to an island which some natives had told the Spaniards was rich in gold. On Nov 22nd Martín Alonso Pinzón, captain under Columbus command, took his ship (La Pinta) in search for it till they reach the shores of Haiti.
